Ex-Constitutional Court Chair Merab Turava Dismissed as Deputy Justice Minister – Civil Georgia

Merab Turava, former Chairman of Georgia’s Constitutional Court, has been dismissed from his post as Deputy Justice Minister in the ruling Georgian Dream government.

Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze signed a decree on Turava’s dismissal, effective June 25. No reason for the dismissal was given.

Turava was appointed as Deputy Justice Minister in April 2025 after serving as head of the Constitutional Court from June 2020 until his term expired in March 2025. He became a judge in 2015, later serving as deputy chair of the court from 2018 before being elevated to its top position.

He was among 102 Georgian individuals sanctioned by Lithuania in spring 2025, as part of wider measures by Baltic states targeting Georgian Dream members and officials over repression and human rights violations in the country.
