Ivanishvili’s Former Bodyguard Appointed Deputy SSSG Chief After Less Than Month as Deputy Interior Minister – Civil Georgia

Giorgi Bakhuashvili, who reportedly served as a personal bodyguard of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the billionaire founder and honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has been appointed deputy head of Georgia’s State Security Service under Geka Geladze, after serving less than a month as deputy interior minister under Sulkhan Tamazashvili.

The appointment was made by a July 6 decree signed by Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, marking a rapid move from the Interior Ministry, where Bakhuashvili had served as deputy minister since June 10 after previously heading the ministry’s General Inspection Department.

Bakhuashvili has held a number of positions within Georgia’s law enforcement agencies. From 2023 to 2026, he served as head of a division within the Interior Ministry’s Security Police Department, specifically in the Directorate for the Protection of Movable Property and Individuals. From 2017 to 2023, he served as an inspector in the same division. In 2021, he also served as a senior inspector in the Kakheti Division of the Interior Ministry’s Special Tasks Department. From 2007 to 2017, Bakhuashvili served as a senior officer in the Special State Protection Service.

Media reports have identified Bakhuashvili as a longtime personal bodyguard of Ivanishvili, although the exact period of his service in that role remains unclear.

According to RFE/RL’s Georgian Service, Bakhuashvili regularly accompanied Ivanishvili at public events, including during the 2024 parliamentary and 2025 local elections. He was also seen at an April 2024 event in Tbilisi inspecting the glass of water placed at the podium for Ivanishvili.
