Two people have been arrested after allegedly supplying horse meat instead of beef to kindergartens in Kareli and Marneuli municipalities and obtaining money from the state budget, the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) said on August 4.
The SSSG said the directors of companies B.G.M.1 and Georgian Meat Products Farm had won tenders to supply beef to kindergartens in the two municipalities, which are located in Georgia’s Shida and Kvemo Kartli regions. In May, they “fraudulently supplied horse meat to the kindergartens instead of beef,” obtaining “a large sum of money” from the state budget, the agency said.
The suspects face six to nine years in prison under Articles 180 and 197 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which cover large-scale fraud and falsification, respectively.
