The so-called “supreme court” of the Russian-occupied Ukrainian region of Donetsk has sentenced Georgian fighter Bacho Nonashvili in absentia to 14 years in a “maximum-security penal colony” for fighting on Ukraine’s side “as a mercenary,” Russian state media outlet TASS reported.
Citing the de facto prosecutor’s office, TASS said that 40-year-old Nonashvili arrived in Ukraine via Poland in the summer of 2023, joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces, underwent military training, and participated in combat operations against Russian forces until March 2026.
The de facto prosecutor’s office further claimed that Nonashvili received money equivalent to “over 2.8 million rubles” as a “reward.” He has been placed on an international wanted list.
Several other Georgian fighters who joined Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion have previously been sentenced in absentia by the Russian-backed authorities in Donetsk on similar charges.
