New Zealand Conservative Party Leader, Helen Houghton,
has today announced that she will contest the Tāmaki
electorate at the upcoming General Election, pledging to
bring principled leadership, practical experience, and
unwavering advocacy to the people of the
electorate.
“Tāmaki deserves a representative who
understands the challenges facing everyday New Zealanders
and who is prepared to work tirelessly on their behalf,”
said Ms Houghton.
“Through education, hard work, and
determination, I became a teacher, completed a law degree,
directed a charitable trust, and built my own business. I
have also had the privilege of leading the New Zealand
Conservative Party in both the 2023 and now the 2026 General
Elections.
“I understand the importance of quality
education because I have taught in our classrooms. I
understand the pressures facing small businesses because I
run one. I understand the importance of justice because I
have completed my law degree and advocate for people seeking
fairness. These experiences have shaped the leader I am
today.”
Ms Houghton said voters are increasingly
looking for representatives with real-world experience
rather than lifelong political careers.
“Politics
should be about service, not status. I am standing because I
believe Parliament needs people who have lived the realities
facing New Zealanders—people who will listen, work hard,
and always put their communities first.”
She said her
campaign will focus on restoring confidence in New Zealand’s
education system by returning to the fundamentals that
parents expect.

“As a qualified teacher, I know that
every child can achieve when expectations are high,
classrooms are disciplined, and learning is prioritised. It
is time to restore a culture of excellence in education by
putting academic achievement ahead of ideology, replacing
mediocrity with excellence, and putting effective teaching
back at the heart of every classroom.”
Ms Houghton
said her campaign would also focus on supporting families,
encouraging economic growth, reducing unnecessary
bureaucracy, strengthening community safety, and ensuring
Tāmaki has a strong and accessible voice in
Parliament.
“My journey has taught me that where you
began does not determine where you can go. I believe every
New Zealander deserves the opportunity to succeed through
hard work, responsibility, and
aspiration.”
