Tskhinvali to Expand Operation of Akhalgori, Java Crossing Points – Civil Georgia

Two crossing points along the occupation line between the occupied Tskhinvali/South Ossetia region and Tbilisi-controlled territory will operate more frequently, while close relatives of residents of certain settlements in the Akhalgori and Java districts will have simplified entry procedures, the Tskhinvali-based Res news agency reported on August 20.

According to the report, the plans were announced after a meeting of the region’s so-called “Security Council,” with de facto acting President Marat Kambolov saying residents had repeatedly raised the issue of “border crossing” to address family and everyday needs.

Kambolov said he had instructed the region’s so-called security and interior agencies to work on the issue, while stressing that the security of residents of areas close to the occupation line would remain an “unconditional” priority.

Since August 2022, residents could cross the occupation line from the 20th to the 30th of each month. Under the planned changes:

  • The so-called Mosabruni (Odzisi) crossing point will operate four days a week — Thursday through Sunday — from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It connects the predominantly ethnic Georgian Akhalgori district with Tbilisi-controlled Mtskheta Municipality.
  • The so-called Perevi crossing point will operate three days a week — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays — also from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It connects the occupied Java district with Tbilisi-administered Sachkhere Municipality.

In addition, “the procedure for entry and temporary stay will be simplified for close relatives” of residents of certain settlements in the Akhalgori and Java districts.

The changes will take effect after the de facto government adopts a corresponding resolution.
