A Georgian citizen illegally detained by Russian occupation forces has been released and is now in Tbilisi-controlled territory, the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) said on February 10.
Without disclosing the person’s identity, the agency said the individual was illegally detained on August 9, 2025, in the occupied Akhalgori district near the Tskhinvali occupation line. The SSSG said it actively used “all relevant instruments” available to the central government to secure the release.
“Georgia’s central government and the State Security Service continue active work to free all Georgian citizens illegally detained in the occupied territories,” the agency added.
Unlike in the past, the agency no longer discloses detainees’ identities or publishes photos of their release, and reports on such cases only after the individuals are freed.
