Georgia’s Interior Ministry announced the arrest of a U.S. and Uzbek citizen who was internationally wanted by U.S. law enforcement authorities, following “close bilateral coordination” with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
“The man was wanted on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support, and attempting to provide such support,” the ministry said in an August 18 statement.
It added that the suspect was arrested at Tbilisi International Airport upon arriving in Georgia from an unspecified foreign country, noting that extradition proceedings against him are currently underway.
According to U.S. law enforcement authorities cited by the ministry, the man had formed a group in the United States to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization and had established and led a financial support network for the same purpose.
The group’s leader and members allegedly provided material, logistical, and financial support to terrorist organizations operating in Syria, including the Islamic State. The ministry also said the suspect allegedly encouraged various individuals to travel to Syria to fight and assisted them in doing so.
