Georgia’s Communications Commission (ComCom), the state media regulator, has fined pro-government POSTV GEL 2,500 (about USD 950) for violating “impartiality” principles, marking the first known such fine against a pro-Georgian Dream channel.
ComCom said on August 6 that the fine followed June 22–23 monitoring, which found POSTV’s news broadcasts disseminating “personal opinions” and failing to present “facts with due accuracy” as required by law. The regulator did not specify the details of the coverage at issue, citing only the country’s Broadcasting Law, which prohibits broadcasters from covering news and certain public-political programs based on “personal attitudes or opinions.”
Although ComCom fined opposition-leaning channels Formula TV in May and TV Pirveli in June by the same amounts, the latest case marks the first time the state regulator, widely accused of serving the ruling party’s interests, has penalized a pro-Georgian Dream channel.
ComCom noted that the fine against POSTV followed a written warning issued, apparently referring to its April decision to warn four channels — pro-government Imedi TV and POSTV and opposition-leaning Formula TV and TV Pirveli — over violations of impartiality principles under 2025 amendments to the Broadcasting Law that authorized it to regulate broadcast content.
POSTV, along with Imedi TV, was sanctioned by the United Kingdom in February over “Russian disinformation.”
