Alliance Back To Champion Democratic Socialism Amid Post-Election Uncertainty

With Saturday night’s 2026 General Election results
delivering no clear majority for either major bloc, the
Alliance Party says its achievement in the campaign has been
re-establishing itself on the political
landscape.

Alliance Party Leader Victor Billot says
that while the Alliance received a small number of party
votes, the party achieved its primary goal of getting back
on the field and running a credible
campaign.

“Driven by a desire to get the Coalition
out, most voters went for the ‘less bad’ option in what
was a negative election defined by low expectations,” says
Mr Billot.

Mr Billot says the lack of a clear mandate
for the status quo parties, alongside a historically low
combined vote for the two major parties, reflects deep
public frustration.

He says a small party like the
Alliance provided an extensive, in-depth manifesto and
policy framework, whereas major parties with massive
resources ran ‘vibe-based’ campaigns with little
substance.

“The fact that several high-profile
Government Ministers are out of Parliament delivers a clear
message about how volatile New Zealand politics will be
going forward.

“No matter what arrangement emerges
from the negotiations, the problem is bigger than any one
Government. It is the entire system that has to be changed,
as the current one is destroying economic security for the
working class, undermining our national resilience, and
wrecking the planet.”

Mr Billot says the Alliance is
building for the long term and will continue to organise
outside Parliament, alongside unions and community
campaigns.

“The real success for the Alliance is
that we are back. We have rebuilt from the ground up with a
new generation of young and committed candidates who stepped
forward to bring a genuine democratic socialist message back
into New Zealand communities,” says Mr
Billot.

“Our intention is to move Aotearoa New
Zealand towards a secure and equal society for all. We will
continue to campaign relentlessly for full employment, job
security, comprehensive tax justice including a wealth tax,
free healthcare and education, state housing, and the return
of essential assets like power, water, and transport to
public ownership.

“This campaign was the launchpad.
The Alliance is back for good, and our work to build the
movement for a country that works for working people
continues today.”

Mr Billot thanked the Alliance
Party team and all those who supported or considered the
Party in the
election.
