National’s two North Canterbury /
Marlborough MPs are looking set to return to Parliament with
large majorities.
In Waimakariri, Matt Doocey is ahead
by 9675 votes over Labour’s Dan Rosewarne, with more than 70
percent of votes counted.
If results continue to go
his way, Mr Doocey will return for a fifth term after first
being elected in 2014 – making him the longest serving
Waimakariri MP.
“It’s looking encouraging. For me, in
the Waimakariri it’s really encouraging to see such a strong
response.
“It’s a real privilege to be the Waimakariri
MP and I will be back at work on Monday.
“I felt it
was a good campaign. I was getting a good response on the
ground and a good vibe.”
He said there was plenty of
work to do, including delivering the after hours medical
centre in Rangiora and the Woodend Bypass.
Mr Doocey
said it was also looking encouraging for the National Party
overall.
“Encouraging to see the party vote. Some of
the commentators are even picking the return of a
centre-right Government.”
But sitting Labour List MP
Mr Rosewarne is not looking likely to return to
Parliament.
In Kaikōura, Stuart Smith has a 7860 lead
over Labour’s Matt Flight, with more than 91% of votes
counted.
“I feel humbled by the support of the
community,” Mr Smith said.
“I work hard for them and
it’s good to see they’ve turned out to support me. It’s yet
to be seen how it’s all going to play out (nationally), but
I’m worked hard to earn the trust of the Kaikōura
electorate.
“It’s been a great journey and I’ve had a
wonderful team around me.”
Mr Smith will return to
Parliament for a fifth term, after first being elected in
2014.
