SSSG Arrests Georgian Citizen Over Alleged Attempt to Sell Uranium to Foreign National – Civil Georgia

Georgia’s State Security Service (SSSG) said it arrested a Georgian citizen for allegedly attempting to sell uranium-238 to a foreign citizen for USD 700,000.

“As a result of a joint operation conducted by officers of the Counterintelligence and Special Operations departments, a Georgian citizen was arrested for the illegal handling of nuclear material, specifically the radioactive substance uranium,” the SSSG said.

According to the agency, the investigation established that “the detainee planned to sell the nuclear material in his possession, uranium-238, to a foreign citizen for USD 700,000.”

The SSSG said the investigation is underway under Article 230 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to the illegal handling of nuclear material or equipment, radioactive waste, and radioactive substances, and carries a prison sentence of up to ten years.
