Georgia’s Interior Ministry said it detained a suspect with links to a “Nazi-fascist” ideology who had previously been convicted and was serving a suspended sentence, over two episodes of ill-treatment of minors. The accused faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
The ministry said in a September 25 statement that in 2023, “one of the leaders of a group with a ‘Nazi-fascist’ ideology, together with fellow group members, lured an acquaintance to an abandoned area in Tbilisi under false pretenses,” where they assaulted the minor with various “blunt objects” and subjected him to “inhuman and degrading treatment.”
The ministry did not specify whether the detainee was the leader of the group or one of its members.
The investigation further established that in 2025, the suspect organized the group assault and degrading and inhuman treatment of another minor, the ministry said.
It added that the probe revealed that the “accused’s associates filmed, on a mobile phone, video footage depicting the physical and psychological coercion and degrading acts committed against the minor, with the intention of posting it online.”
The suspect was detained following “complex investigative and procedural actions” and based on a judge’s ruling, according to the ministry.
“Some of the individuals involved in these crimes are already serving their sentences in a penitentiary institution,” the ministry said, adding that investigative actions are ongoing to identify other individuals connected to violent groups holding fascist ideology.
The ministry did not disclose the detainee’s identity. However, RFE/RL’s Georgian service reported that the person detained is reportedly Davit Japarov.
Georgian police have arrested at least 15 minors in recent months, including in January and March, on allegations of involvement in “neo-Nazi” and “radical fascist” groups that physically and psychologically abused people of various ages, including minors, with “extreme cruelty.”
