Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international public broadcaster, launched an EU-funded Georgian-language news service on Instagram on August 3, with plans to expand to additional platforms at a later stage.
The new service will cover stories from Georgia, Europe and around the world, offering what its launch announcement described as “reliable, objective, and timely” information on current affairs.
The project is funded by the European Union and is part of the “European Information Shield Initiative,” a joint project led by DW and Fact-Checking and Media Literacy (FMM), together with Polish international broadcaster TVP World. The initiative aims to “strengthen independent journalism and counter disinformation” in the South Caucasus, DW said in a July 21 press release.
The Georgian-language service is part of a wider regional effort as FMM has established an Armenian-language offering, while TVP World has launched an Azerbaijani-language service, according to the same press release. The three projects are expected to cooperate and share content, with the aim of expanding the reach of independent journalism across the region.
The initiative is funded for an initial 18 months and builds on previous European cooperation projects involving DW and FMM, including ENTR and InfoMigrants.
German daily Taz reported that the Georgian editorial team will consist of five to seven journalists, most of whom are based in Germany. One journalist is expected to join from Georgia. The newspaper identified Zura Karaulashvili as head of the Georgian-language editorial team.
In late April, Polish public broadcaster TVP launched VT Sakartvelo, a Georgian-language news service broadcast.
