Botchorishvili to Attend Rubio’s Ministerial on ‘Far-Left Political Terrorism’ – Civil Georgia

Georgian Dream Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili will participate on July 16 in the ministerial on the “Resurgence of Political Terrorism” in Washington, D.C., at the invitation of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Foreign Ministry announced late on July 15. According to the U.S. State Department, the event will focus on “far-left political terrorism” and encourage “stronger joint action.”

“Far-left political terrorism is resurgent, manifesting in violent acts across the Western Hemisphere, Europe, Asia and beyond,” the U.S. State Department said, adding that “these are not isolated incidents,” but reflect a “deliberate” and “ideologically motivated strategy” to destabilize societies by targeting, among others, private citizens, government officials, and law enforcement officers.

The statement specifically referred to groups including “Antifa Ost,” the “Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front (FAI/FRI),” “Armed Proletarian Justice,” and “Revolutionary Class Self-Defense,” designated by the United States as terrorist organizations in 2025.

The event will bring together partners to “expand coordination, enhance information sharing, and strengthen international law enforcement mechanisms to counter the threat,” the State Department added.

While no official guest list accompanied the announcement, Reuters reported, citing a State Department official, that “at least 65 countries will be represented at the event, some by foreign and interior ministers and some by lower-level officials.”

The invitation comes amid the Georgian Dream government’s stated efforts to reset relations with the U.S. “from a clean slate” and resume the strategic partnership “with a specific roadmap.” Washington, under President Joe Biden, suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia in November 2024 amid the Tbilisi protests and later that year sanctioned the ruling party’s billionaire founder, Bidzina Ivanishvili. The Donald Trump administration has yet to reverse those decisions.
