Kobakhidze Meets American Economist Jeffrey Sachs in Tbilisi – Civil Georgia

Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met with Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist, Columbia University professor and commentator known for his controversial geopolitical views, in Tbilisi on June 28.

According to a Georgian government press release, the meeting focused on “reforms” underway in Georgia, the country’s “investment and tourism potential,” and its “progress” across a range of sectors, with talks highlighting the Georgian Dream government’s efforts to promote regional “peace and stability.” The meeting was also attended by Georgian Dream Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili and Government Administration Head Levan Zhorzholiani.

Sachs has become known in recent years for his criticism of U.S., EU and NATO policies, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine, arguing that West contributed to the circumstances leading up to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a view that critics say aligns with Kremlin narratives.

Sachs has frequently appeared in Russian state media and is often cited by Georgia’s pro-government media outlets and members of the ruling Georgian Dream party. In late 2024, he also expressed support for the so-called 3+3 regional cooperation format involving the three South Caucasus countries, Russia, Iran and Turkey, a platform that Tbilisi has so far declined to join.
