With a Maritime Zone approximately 15 times the size New
Zealand’s land area, the Conservative Party is committed
to protecting that vast natural
environment.
Sustainable Fisheries Policy, developed
and supported by all political parties since 1980’s,
demonstrated early positive outcomes protecting
over-fishing.
Several other countries adopt variations
of the policy.
By 2005 faults in the integrity of
management were exposed.
The Conservative Party
accepts the validity of claims that the Sustainable
Fisheries Policy is now widely abused.
To protect our
marine environment, the Conservative Party resolves to fight
for a complete overhaul of the policy.
Priorities:
Promote the Kermadec Ocean
Sanctuary Bill.
To establish a permanent marine
protected area in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone
around the Kermadec Islands and to preserve it in its
natural state.
To ensure compliance with a reviewed
Sustainable Fisheries Policy, including surveillance cameras
to be reinstalled on all commercial fishing
vessels.
