The ITUC welcomes the historic adoption of Decent Work in
the Platform Economy Convention, 2026, by the 114th
International Labour Conference.
This marks a major
step towards ensuring that millions of platform workers
enjoy the rights, protections and dignity that every worker
deserves.
As the first global labour standard for
platform workers, the Convention:
- Affirms that
fundamental rights at work apply to the platform economy,
such as freedom of association and collective bargaining
. - Includes protection against
misclassification. - Strengthens protection against
unfair deactivation. - Recognises algorithmic
management and improves transparency and
accountability. - Calls for measures to ensure timely
payment of remuneration not below the minimum wage, and
access to social protection. - Contains safeguards to
protect workers’ personal data.
Requires
Governments to take particular measures to ensure that
platform workers can remove themselves from work if there is
a risk to their health and safety, without fear of
retaliation, and to protect them from violence and
harassment at work.
ITUC General Secretary Luc
Triangle said: “Governments must now move swiftly to
ratify and implement the Convention. The future of work must
be built on democratic workers’ rights and decent work,
not on precariousness and exclusion. Platform workers can
now use this Convention to organise in trade unions, just
like other workers to defend their rights and
interests.
“I congratulate the worker delegates to
the Conference and unions from around the world for their
determination and solidarity throughout these negotiations.
We will continue to work for wide ratification and the
effective implementation of this new global labour
standard.”
