Tausi Moana marks the
next chapter in the evolution of the Moana Pasifika
Community programme. Originally established to nurture
Pacific youth sporting talent, reduce financial barriers to
participation and create high-trust community events, the
programme has built a strong foundation through sport,
connection and community.
As the programme
now operates directly within the Pasifika Medical
Association (PMA) Group, the transition to Tausi
Moana reflects an expanded vision and a
stronger opportunity to connect sport with health,
wellbeing, leadership and community
development.
Tausi is a Samoan
term encompassing the ideas of loving, protecting, serving,
providing and holding, while Moana
represents the ocean that connects Pacific peoples.
Together, Tausi Moana speaks to our
commitment to care for and serve Pacific communities, using
sport as a vehicle to bring people together and create
opportunities for Pacific families to thrive.
The
Vision
Our vision is “Thriving and prosperous
Pacific communities through the transformative power of
sports.”
Tausi Moana recognises sport as more
than recreation. For Pacific communities, sport is a
powerful catalyst for unity, identity, belonging and
engagement. It creates trusted spaces where children, young
people, parents, elders and extended families can come
together.

Our ambition is to use these spaces to
create pathways to wellbeing, connection and leadership,
while making participation accessible and removing financial
barriers for Pacific families.
With more than
20,000–25,000 community touchpoints recorded across the
2024–2025 event footprint, the programme has demonstrated
the reach and trust that community sport can provide. This
gives Tausi Moana a unique platform to connect families with
wider health, education and social opportunities.
The
Direction Forward
Over the next four years, Tausi
Moana will focus on three interconnected
priorities:
- Funding, Partnerships &
Sustainability – building a diversified,
multi-year funding model through government, corporate and
philanthropic partnerships, while maintaining low-cost or
free access to core community
events. - Culture, Inclusion & Connection
– creating safe, culturally grounded and
multigenerational community “villages” where everyone
has a place, with targeted opportunities for youth, women,
elders, preschoolers and people with
disabilities. - Impact –
strengthening the connection between community sport and
measurable wellbeing outcomes, including flexible alignment
with Etu Pasifika clinics and opportunities for health
promotion, screening and broader PMA Group support at
community events.
The model will remain
asset-light and community-led, working with schools, sports
clubs, community venues, volunteers and local partners
rather than relying on significant physical
infrastructure.
The name has changed, but the heart of
the work remains the same: to serve Pacific families,
strengthen communities and create pathways for future
generations to
flourish.
