Alliance Party Announces Full Set Of Democratic Socialist Policies For Election ‘26

3 September 2026

Over the next two weeks, the
Alliance Party will be announcing detailed alternative
policies to the establishment consensus in New Zealand
politics.

Alliance Leader Victor Billot says that the
forthcoming policies will confirm the Alliance as the only
political party in the election presenting an unapologetic,
fully costed, democratic socialist programme.

He says
the Alliance stands for a country that works for working
people.

“For forty years, working people in Aotearoa
have watched successive governments manage the same broken
economic model,” says Victor Billot.

Wages and
living standards have stagnated or declined for the
working-class majority who keep our society functioning, he
says.

“The political establishment offers minor
tweaks while essential services crumble, housing remains
unaffordable, and our health system plunges further into
crisis.”

Mr Billot says the Alliance policies are
ensuring working people can achieve a secure life for
themselves and their families.

The Alliance platform
sees housing, decent work, and transport as public goods
rather than market commodities.

Key Alliance
principles include:

  • Economic Justice: Shifting
the tax burden off work and onto wealth in a cost-of-living
    crisis.
  • Public Ownership: Expanding state and
cooperative ownership of essential services and
    infrastructure to benefit everyday New
    Zealanders.
  • Extending Democracy: Extending
democratic decision-making directly into workplaces and
    local communities.
  • Quality Public Services:
Reversing the shameful underfunding of key services like
    health
    care.
