Civil.ge is seeking to fill a full-time position of a Staff Writer. The position will be based on-site in our Tbilisi office, in the editorial team supervised by the Editor-in-Chief.

Civil Georgia (Civil.ge) is a Tbilisi-based independent online media outlet that has provided contextualised coverage of social, political, and economic developments in and around Georgia for an international audience since 2001. Over more than two decades of coverage, Civil.ge has built a reputation as a reliable source on Georgia and the country’s media of record, providing nuanced reporting to a broad audience both in and outside the country.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Staff Writer will work full-time as part of Civil.ge’s small but diverse newsroom, producing news articles and longer-form pieces in English under the supervision and mentorship of the Chief Editor. The primary workload will focus on daily news reporting, with opportunities, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and interests, to produce or contribute to newsletters, columns, interviews, explainers, analytical pieces, backgrounders, and features on a pre-arranged schedule.

The candidate will be joining the newsroom at a particularly turbulent time for Georgia and its independent media. Building on the rich coverage produced by previous and current staff, the Staff Writer will contribute to the continued accurate reporting and documentation of the country’s major social, political, and economic developments.

Civil.ge is committed to providing the selected candidate with on-site professional training and opportunities for further professional development, including space to find their unique journalistic style and voice and pursue independent projects and initiatives. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce accurate and timely news copy on assigned topics and beats according to Civil.ge’s house style.
  • Produce and contribute to longer-form journalistic pieces, including interviews, backgrounders, explainers, analytical pieces, and features.
  • Contribute to drafting Civil.ge’s regular newsletters.
  • Monitor primary sources daily, including political, social, and economic trends; parliamentary and government activity; official statements; legal and regulatory documents; court proceedings; press conferences; and public data.
  • Contact relevant respondents and sources for comment, clarification, and interviews.
  • Fact-check information, quotes, and figures and cross-check them against original and primary sources before submitting copy.
  • Place individual developments in context by connecting them to preceding events, relevant legislation, and broader political trends.
  • Assist the newsroom with other tasks related to reporting and news production.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prior experience in journalistic, academic, or technical writing in English with a focus on Georgia’s social, political, and economic developments.
  • Academic background in journalism, social and political sciences, international relations, or another relevant field.
  • Excellent written English, with the ability to write in a clear, economical, and neutral news style. Interest in and ability to write across a range of technical or creative genres will be considered an asset.
  • Strong command of Georgian, sufficient to read and interpret primary sources and follow developments in Georgian.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, particularly in handling names, figures, and direct quotations.
  • Genuine interest in Georgian politics and public affairs, and a habit of following the news closely.
  • Ability to work to tight daily deadlines under editorial direction, and willingness to work shifts.
  • Adherence to Civil.ge’s editorial principles.
  • Sensitivity to social and human rights issues
