Georgian Dream-elected President Mikheil Kavelashvili has granted pardons to 226 people on the occasion of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Mariamoba), a religious holiday marked in Georgia on August 28.
According to Kavelashvili’s office, the pardons covered 217 convicted individuals serving custodial sentences and six others serving non-custodial sentences. Three others had their criminal records expunged.
The names of those pardoned are not released, as is customary.
“The President of Georgia’s exercise of the exclusive power granted by the Constitution is based on the principles of humanism and the national interest,” the President’s Administration said in its press release.
