The State Security Service of Georgia, in cooperation with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), conducted the interagency field exercise “NEXUS Georgia 2026,” focused on responding to chemical and biological threats, SSSG reported.
Among the participants were representatives of state agencies responsible for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) security, including personnel from SSSG and relevant units of the ministries of internal affairs, defense, economy, finance, and health.
“As part of the exercise, the participating agencies had the opportunity to work, under real-world conditions, on chemical and biological incidents unfolding according to three different scenarios, to test existing standard operating procedures in practice, and to identify specific flaws in incident response and interagency coordination,” the SSSG said in a September 2 statement.
The agency said “appropriate recommendations” would be developed based on the results of the field exercise to address the challenges identified during the drills. It added that “new projects and training exercises will be initiated with the support of partner countries.”
Another simulation exercise is scheduled to be held in Mtskheta on September 8 and will involve practical training in responding to chemical substances and explosives in places of mass gathering, according to the SSSG.
“The State Security Service of Georgia and the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency have maintained successful cooperation for many years,” the SSSG said. “DTRA provides significant support for the development and enhanced resilience of Georgia’s security sector, including strengthening capabilities for the prevention of and response to CBRN threats.”
