Georgia and the Republic of Naoero, formerly known as Nauru, have established diplomatic relations almost two months after the small Pacific island nation has withdrawn its recognition of Georgia’s two occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia as “independent states.”
According to the Georgian government’s September 21 press release, the agreement was signed by Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Nauru President David Adeang in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Nauru announced in late July cutting diplomatic relations with Sokhumi and Tskhinvali and withdrawing its 2009 decision to recognize them as “independent states.” The Georgian Foreign Ministry expressed readiness to establish diplomatic relations with the South Pacific island nation following the move.
Kobakhidze “once again thanked the President of the Republic of Nauru for revoking diplomatic relations with the occupied territories of Georgia,” adding that “this decision underscores once again that adherence to the principles of international law is the foundation of stable and responsible international relations,” according to the press release.
The sides also discussed “cooperation in multilateral formats, including within the framework of international organizations,” as well as “prospects for deepening partnership and people-to-people ties in areas of mutual interest,” the press service said.
Georgian Dream Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, Head of Government Administration Levan Zhorzholiani, and Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations David Bakradze also attended the meeting, according to the press service.
With Nauru’s withdrawal of recognition, Russia, Syria, Venezuela, and Nicaragua are now the only countries that continue to recognize Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia as “independent states.” Vanuatu and Tuvalu previously recognized the two regions but revoked their recognition in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
