The Electoral Commission has confirmed a processing error
affecting voter enrolments. Approximately 6,300 people on
residence class visas who had submitted valid applications
have now been added to the electoral roll and notified that
they are enrolled and able to vote. The Commission
apologised, describing the breakdown as
“disappointing.”
At the same time, the Commission
identified roughly 1,200 people who were incorrectly added
to the roll. These were individuals on temporary entry class
visas (such as work visas) or whose visas had expired. They
will be removed from the roll before the official count and
notified in writing. Any votes already cast by these people
will be disallowed.
What you should
do
- Check your enrolment status promptly at
vote.nz or by contacting the Electoral
Commission. - If you receive communication from the
Commission (email from help@enquiries.vote.nz, text from
5101, or phone call from 0800 434 637), read it carefully
and follow the instructions. - Confirm you are
correctly enrolled and eligible before voting or if you have
already voted.
The Commission states it has
strengthened integrity checks and that people can still have
confidence in the overall quality of the electoral roll.
Nonetheless, individual verification remains the most
reliable step to ensure your vote is counted
correctly.
