October 4 Convict Nana Sander to Leave Prison Early After Reaching Plea Agreement – Civil Georgia

Nana Sander is another person convicted in connection with the October 4, 2025 Tbilisi unrest to leave prison early after the Court of Appeals approved her plea agreement with prosecutors. She is set to be released on November 6.

Judge Paata Silagadze approved the plea agreement on November 2 after she pleaded guilty, reducing her original seven-year prison sentence to one year and one month, followed by a two-year suspended sentence.

In a June 24 ruling, Tbilisi City Court found Sander guilty on charges of “organizing group violence.” Sander, who has lived in emigration prior to arriving in Georgia to take part in the protests, has reported physical and mental health deterioration while in detention.

In the same case, the judge upheld the sentences of two other defendants, Mariam Mekantslishvili and Abo Naveriani. Naveriani was sentenced to five years in prison, while Mekantslishvili received a GEL 5,000 [USD 1,923] fine.

Unrest erupted in Tbilisi on October 4, 2025, the day of a partially boycotted municipal election. Following a call by organizers of a rally advocating what they described as a “peaceful revolution,” a group of protesters attempted to enter the presidential palace in downtown Tbilisi but were repelled by the police.

The latest agreement follows a series of plea deals involving dozens of defendants prosecuted over the October 4 events. On October 28, the Court of Appeals approved plea agreements for four other defendants, including Murtaz Zodelava, Lasha Beridze, Irakli Chkhvirkia and Guri Zhvania.

A total of 64 people, including opposition politicians, have been charged in connection with the unrest. More than half of them have secured early release through plea agreements or a presidential pardon.
