Man Arrested As Tourist From Belarus Alleges Attack Over Russian Speech in Tbilisi – Civil Georgia

The Interior Ministry confirmed that one person has been arrested, as Russian sources cited a tourist from Belarus alleging that a man physically attacked her at Tbilisi railway station because she was speaking Russian. The alleged assailant reportedly claimed that he hit her after she rejected his attempt to introduce himself.

The incident, which reportedly took place several days ago, was covered by Russian media outlets, including Lenta.ru, which cited reports from the Telegram channel Baza.

According to Baza, the woman, identified as Alexandra, a fitness trainer from Minsk, accused an unknown man of attacking her after hearing her speaking Russian with a friend at the railway station in Tbilisi. The woman subsequently contacted the police, Baza reported, adding that the man claimed in police custody that he hit her after she “rudely” rejected his attempt to introduce himself, an account the tourist denies.

The Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest to Civil.ge, saying he was arrested at the scene under Article 126 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which covers beating or other violence causing physical pain and is punishable by a fine, community service, house arrest, or imprisonment for up to one year.
