Georgia’s State Security Service Chief Geka Geladze announced his resignation on September 14, marking the fourth time the agency’s head has left the post in less than two years. It has yet to be announced who will replace him.
Geladze, a former Interior Minister who assumed office in April, replacing Mamuka Mdinaradze as the fifth head of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) since its establishment in 2015, did not name the reason for his resignation, but said he would continue his activities “in another agency” following “consultations with the political team.”
In a statement published by the SSSG, Geladze extended “special thanks” to the agency staff and also thanked the “political team, especially the [ruling] party’s Honorary Chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze” for the trust.
Geladze is the fourth head of the SSSG to leave his post in less than two years, following Grigol Liluashvili (April 2025), Anri Okhanashvili (August 2025), and Mamuka Mdinaradze (April 2026), making it one of the agencies with the most frequent leadership changes.
Before becoming SSSG chief, Geladze served as GD Interior Minister from May 2025. He had previously served as Deputy Education Minister (2023-2024), Head of the Education Ministry’s Human Resources Service (2018-2023), Head of the Interior Ministry’s Central Criminal Police Department (2016-2018), and Deputy Head of the National Probation Agency (2012-2016). Earlier, he held various positions at the Interior and Justice ministries and worked in the private sector.
Under the rules of procedure, the Parliament of Georgia elects the SSSG head for a six-year term.
Geladze’s resignation also follows a broader trend among Georgian Dream officials quitting their offices or politics altogether. It comes shortly after his predecessor, Mamuka Mdinaradze, announced his departure from politics after changing his roles multiple times over the year.
