Heavy rains on August 27 damaged orchards, crops, and roads in the western Georgian region of Imereti, with the damage particularly affecting neighborhoods and villages in Baghdati Municipality.
Videos from the scene show streams of water rushing through roads and orchards and entering homes, with locals saying the rains caused small rivers to swell suddenly. Residents are seen struggling to protect their houses, yards and belongings, while appealing to the authorities for assistance.
“In just half an hour, this small river wreaked havoc on all my family’s work,” a resident of Obcha village of Baghdati municipality wrote on social media, posting videos of the orchard filled by rapidly moving water and a flooded house. “I have no words. I walk around in tears.”
Local media also published an image showing a section of a forest-covered slope that had collapsed.
Heavy flooding was also reported in villages in nearby Zestaphoni Municipality, while rainwater flooded streets in Kutaisi, the region’s administrative center.
The Baghdati Municipality City Hall said authorities are operating in emergency mode, and a commission has been set up to assess the damage. Hundreds of households have been left without gas and electricity.
