Heavy Rain And Strong Winds Linked To Cyclone Urmil Impact Fiji

The centre of category 2 Tropical Cyclone Urmil is not
expected to move directly over Fiji, however, heavy rain and
strong winds linked to the system are already affecting
parts of the country.

The Nadi Weather Office said
that at 6am, 1 March local time, the centre of Tropical
Cyclone Urmil was located about 520km southwest of
Nadi.

It said it is tracking south-eastward and is
moving at a faster pace, currently at about
30km/hr.

The Weather Office strongly urges the public
to continue following official weather warnings and
advisories, as well as advisories from the National Disaster
Management authorities.

The Fiji Meteorological
Service is issuing special weather bulletins for weather
events impacting the group.

Meanwhile, a flash flood
warning is now in force for the whole of Viti Levu, while a
Flash Flood Alert remains in force for the whole of Vanua
Levu.

The Weather Office says a heavy rain warning
also remains in force for Fiji.

Surface flooding may
occur on streets in urban areas with poor drainage, along
with wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy
downpours, increasing the risk of road accidents.

A
Fiji government post on social media said travellers using
Nadi International Airport are advised to remain alert as
heavy rainfall associated with the current weather system
increases the risk of flash flooding and river flooding in
affected areas.

Passengers are strongly encouraged to
stay connected with their respective airlines for the latest
flight information. Airlines will issue timely notifications
should there be any changes to
schedules.
