Brazilian Amazon Consortium And China Strengthen Cooperation For Sustainable Development At COP30

The Amazon Consortium (CAL) and Chinese
institutions strengthened, during COP30, the scientific,
economic, and environmental cooperation ties between Brazil
and China. The event “Brazil and China Towards
Sustainability in a Shared Future”
, held at the
Consortium Pavilion in the Blue Zone, brought together
authorities, scientists, and government representatives from
both countries to discuss joint solutions in energy,
agriculture, biodiversity, and the ecological
transition.

The initiative, organized by the Legal
Amazon Consortium in partnership with IPAM (Amazon
Environmental Research Institute)
, the
Ministry of Ecology and Environment of
China
, and Renmin University
(RUC)
, celebrated 50 years of
Brazil–China diplomatic relations
and the recent
joint declaration establishing the “Sino-Brazilian
Community for a Shared Future for a Sustainable
Planet.”

The bilateral meeting featured four
thematic panels: “Sino-Brazilian Experiences in Forests
and Infrastructure,” “The Air We Breathe: Connections
for Air Quality and Green Cities,” “Energy Transition
and China–Brazil Cooperation,” and “The Toolbox for
the Future of Agriculture: Artificial Intelligence and
Regenerative Practices.”

Marcello Brito, Executive
Secretary of the Amazon Consortium and COP30 Special Envoy
for the subnational states of the Amazon, stressed that the
meeting marks a new phase in cooperation between the two
regions. “Brazil and China showed today that this
partnership is grounded in concrete agendas on forests, air
quality, energy transition, and the future of agriculture
with artificial intelligence and regenerative practices.
When we bring science, investment, and standing forests to
the same table, we open the way to genuine shared prosperity
between the Amazon and China,” he said.

According to
André Guimarães, President of IPAM and COP30 Special Envoy
for Civil Society, Brazil–China dialogue on climate is
strategic for the food and economic security of both
countries. “Brazil and China are two giants of the Global
South, deeply connected by a trade relationship based, among
other things, on food production. That is why bringing
Brazil and China closer together to discuss climate risks
and protect the forest is, at the same time, good
environmental policy and an excellent economic investment
for both countries,” he stated.

The discussions
highlighted the urgency of expanding joint investments in
conservation, bioeconomy, science, and technology, focusing
on reducing deforestation and enhancing the value of the
Amazon’s environmental and cultural assets.

As a
follow-up to the meeting, representatives from both
countries committed to developing, based on the debates held
today, a bilateral technical document with recommendations
and successful experiences from both sides, consolidating
the partnership between the Legal Amazon Consortium and
Chinese institutions around a common agenda of
sustainability, innovation, and shared
prosperity.
